With our classes you’ll learn all the practical skills of Sketch writing as well as how to hone your comedic voice on the page. A sketch writing intensive
Sketch Comedy: Level 1 – Writing Intensive
Unique to Instant Theatre, the 4 week Sketch Writing Intensive will teach students the valuable fundamentals of sketch comedy writing including: Premise, Comedic Conflict, Creating Memorable Comic Characters, Rule of Three, Comedic Twist, Collaboration, Satire & Parody.
Prerequisites: No experience is necessary but students will be expected to write a sketch a week (on their own or collaborate) outside of class time.
Unique to Instant Theatre, the 4 week Sketch Writing Intensive will teach students the valuable fundamentals of sketch comedy writing including: Premise, Comedic Conflict, Creating Memorable Comic Characters, Rule of Three, Comedic Twist, Collaboration, Satire & Parody. Weekly classes will be split between practical lessons & group exercises, as well as, workshopping student sketches in a weekly writers room.
After 4 weeks, students will gain a foundation in the basics of sketch writing, the invaluable feedback & experience of working in a weekly comedy writer’s room and the tools & knowledge to further develop their comedic writing.
Spring into sketch comedy with the art of improv
Sketch Comedy: Level 1 – Improv to Sketch
Using improv comedy techniques, students will learn how to create sketch comedy premises and how to get those ideas onto paper.
Prerequisites: Some training in improv will be helpful but not required.

Sketch Comedy: Level 2 – Premise to Performance
Building off Level One, Instant Theatre’s Level Two – 6-week Sketch Comedy Workshop is a great place to further develop and hone your sketch-based comedy skills both in class & in front of a live audience! Guided by experienced instructors, students will dive into the anatomy of building a live sketch show, as well as, creating their own small sketch portfolio.
Prerequisites: Sketch Level 1 (Writing Intensive and/or Improv to Sketch)
Six 3hr Workshops and One Performance

During this 6 week course, students will focus on:
- Generating material for original sketches
- Using improv & brainstorming as a writing tool
- Writing sketches (both individually and as a team)
- Pitching, producing & punching-up sketches in a comedy writers room
- Developing strong premises, comedic conflict, comic twists, tone & timing
- Creating strong physical action & memorable comic characters
- Building a sketch show (order, transitions, variety, etc…)
- Weekly rehearsals of sketches & overall show
- A live performance of the final sketch show at the Havana Theatre!
This Level Two course will require some work outside of class hours in the form of challenging and fun writing assignments, final drafts of sketches, and learning lines but all rehearsals are intended to take place in the room with the other cast members for maximum fun/support/joke-making. Be ready to write & create like mad!
The 6 week Premise to Performance class is going to be an absolute blast, giving Instant Theatre students the awesome experience of being able to create & perform their own live show as part of a fully formed sketch troupe. As well as, create the beginnings of a sketch portfolio and gain valuable writing & performing credits!
