At Instant Studios we love comedic performance and believe that every performer should learn the tools to craft a committed performance. We offer a wide range of classes to develop a performer’s ability to perform physically on stage and on camera. We also love to offer classes that reinvent or challenge our perspectives of comedy. Explore the world of genre at Instant Theatre, with a new and different genre work out every month! Expand your skills and knowledge of tropes and forms as our instructors take you through a four hour workshop intensive.
The December class will be covering Action movies. Unleash your inner John Mclean or Lt. Ripley in your own improvised action epic!
Prerequisites: Some improv and performance experience is required.
Bold Offers with Amy Shostak
1 class – 5 hours – Saturday April 15th – 12pm to 5pm
Feel like your scenes are falling flat, or living in a grey, unspecific world?
An offer is any action – verbal, or physical – that helps build a scene. By exploring specificity, emotion and commitment, this class will aim to up the power of your offers!
Students: Please bring a water bottle, notebook, and snacks, as this is a longer session.
Prerequisites: Students must have completed Intro to Improv or Improv Level 1 at Instant Theatre, or equivalent at other institutions.
About Your Instructor
Amy started improvising with Edmonton’s Rapid Fire Theatre in 2002, and she served as Artistic Director of that company for six years. She is a skilled instructor of both short and long form improvisation, and has traveled to many festivals around the globe. Her improv duo, Rå Power, with Joleen Ballendine, is her current improv passion project. When not improvising, Amy performs sketch comedy with Gossamer Obsessions, and appears regularly on CBC Radio’s The Irrelevant Show. Amy now lives in Vancouver and is jazzed to perform with Instant Theatre.
Acting For Camera with Joel Cottingham
4 weeks – Thursdays 7pm to 9pm – June 8th to 29th

The film and TV industry in Vancouver is hotter than it’s ever been, so now is the time to polish your skills and get to work. Join National Theatre School alumni Joel Cottingham, in a four-week, intensive where he teaches you how to nail your one shot in the room. Sides and Tapings will be provided.
Prerequisites: Some performance experience preferred or instructor permission.
About Your Instructor
Joel Cottingham is an actor and improviser, DJ and music maker, firebrand (mostly) and wet blanket (Tuesdays). Joel loves big physical characters, coffee, his cat, and when the sun is out. Joel is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. Joel’s recent film credits include DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Lucifer, Arrow, Supernatural, and more.
